I've been teaching guitar professionally since 1976, and cover a range from rock, country, folk, metal, pop, funk and most other popular styles.
I offer tuition in fingerstyles and basic classical guitar also.
In recent years I have taken up or revisited mandolin, ukulele and Puerto Rican cuatro, so can offer tuition on these instruments also.
I work progressively with each student, giving basic techniques in playing the instrument so that he/she can apply these techniques to their own preferred style. I also encourage each student to venture into a variety of styles, in order to broaden their concept of playing their instrument.
Having taught classroom and instrumental music in the ACT over the last 20 years, I have prepared many students for both year 12 performances and tertiary level auditions.
The student (whether a beginning player or more advanced) will learn a variety of music styles with me, until he can decide which musical direction he really wishes to pursue.
The emphasis in the early stages will be on learning to play; as guitar is the ideal accompaniment instrument, the student will also be learning chords, rhythms and different accompaniment styles.
From there, he/she will move into learning to read music notation (‘dots’, not tablature - tablature actually has detrimental affects on a student's progress) and learning to play melodies and solo works.
It’s worth thinking about Andre Segovia (the great proponent of classical guitar in the early 1900s) saying in his 90s that he was “still a student of the guitar”. We never really stop learning.
The student can then move into any specialist field - classical, jazz, metal, rock, country, folk and so on, as their taste might dictate. My first priority is to make sure that their technique and understanding of music in general can support their efforts and aspirations.
I can help by suggesting pieces for a student's courses in High School and College. I have also successfully prepared many student for University courses.
Currently I teach at my studio in Reid, ACT, Marist College Pearce, Snowy Mountains Grammar, Jindabyne Central School and at my studio in Kalkite, NSW.
Due to the COVID19 pandemic, I am also giving lessons via Zoom, Facetime or Skype. These have been working well.
